Engakuji Temple-Kamakura
Nearest station: Kita Kamakura.

This is "number one" of Kamakura's Zen temples. It's also very popular and very spacious. As a result, it has almost no atmosphere. Even the Zen garden at the back seems too large as if the Zen has been spread too thin. Having said that, most of the buildings are very big—not least of which is Dharma Hall, the largest wooden temple building in eastern Japan—and the sheer size may impress those easily impressed by bulk.

Don't forget to head to the very back following directions for Hansobo Shrine. It's high up in the hills and the lookout offers a great view of Kamakura and Mount Fuji.
