engakuji temple

Engakuji Temple-Kamakura
Nearest station: Kita Kamakura.

Engakuji temple is just beside Kita-Kamakura railway station, so this makes a good starting point for a day trip.
The grounds are extensive and there's plenty to explore.
On a quiet day this is one of the nicer temples in Kamakura; and in autumn (late November/early December) it's exceptional.

If you look carefully, you will also see a building hiding in the corner with it's thatched roof falling in and covered in plastic sheets. The entire place is ready to tumble down. It's been like this for years in is, unfortunately, typical of the Japanese disregard for their own heritage. You could complain at the entrance desk but even if you speak Japanese they will not understand your point.

Two hundred metres into the grounds, be sure to take the less than obvious trail to the left, up the stairs and enjoy the panoramic view of the entire site.
